In my experience the cream penetrates the leather while wax polishes cover the leather. Wax polishes do attain a higher shine, so if that's what you are looking for go for it, just apply it as the next step after applying and brushing with the cream. Lastly, don't forget the sole of the shoes. Assuming your shoes have leather soles, give them a good brushing with a stiff brush. (not the same brush you use on the leather upper) and use a sole guard conditioner and protector. Typically the sole is what wears out first on a shoe.
