I work as a consulting engineer, spending about 45 hours in the office each week. If a deadline is looming, it could be more like 60, but you do what it takes to get the project done. I have a bachelor's degree, it took me 5 years. I have passed the Professional Engineer (PE) exam. I love my job. I like the feeling of satisfaction I get from seeing a blank sheet turned into plans, schedules and schematics for the contractor to construct the systems. I have worked on many projects but I think my favorite was retrofitting a school to use a biomass boiler as its heat plant. I chose my career by taking the path less traveled. I could have either gone with structural systems (which everyone was doing) or mechanical systems.

I am not sure what you mean by "he repacked it", but if the rear axle were leaking you would see stains on the driveway where you park overnight. Also, the rear axle on this car uses oil, not grease, because it is rear wheel drive. It is similar to engine oil, but thicker (the leak would look similar to an engine oil leak, but would be near the failed seal in the rear axle, if there is one. If the axle is making noises or you can feel clunking or shaking then it may need to be rebuilt or replaced, but if you have not noticed any of that I would be suspicious. There are several seals on a rear axle that can fail. One where the drive-shaft connects to the front of the center housing, one at each end underneath the brake assemblies, and one on the back of the center housing where the cover bolts on (on certain axles there is no cover on the back because there is instead a piece that unbolts from the front just in front of where the axle tubes go off each side, but that will use the same general type of gasket that the rear cover normally uses, and I do not think this type was still common in 1988). Also, some rear axles have a drain plug similar to the one on your engine's oil pan, and that may have an O ring or a gasket. There are several things that occurred to me in reading your question. First, none of these seals are likely to fail this soon unless the car is driven extremely frequently or regularly subjected to heavy loads, although it is not impossible, just unlikely. Second, unless there was oil leaking from a failed seal for the mechanic to see, it would not have been obvious that the axle was low on oil. Again, not impossible but not common either. Basically, this does sound suspicious but not impossible so I would take the car to a different mechanic and tell them that you are verifying what the first one told you because it sounded odd. Make it clear to them that if there is actually a problem you will be having the first mechanic fix it, but you will pay the second mechanic to look at it. That way he wo not try and invent or exaggerate a problem to make money. On a side note, I started learning how to fix my own cars over ten years ago because I had a really bad experience with a really bad mechanic. He botched a simple repair that I could have done myself, and he did it so badly that the car was actually dangerous to drive. I found that out later that night after all the shops had closed when I took the area in question apart because the car was acting bad in a different way. And he was very nice until I went back to his shop the next day and told him what I had found. Since then I have done almost everything on my (and my wife's) cars. Since that incident, I have met several honest, good mechanics, but I still do my own work because I kind of enjoy it. I hope this helps.
